FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN EACH CLASS?
At Millpond Academy we have a maximum student teacher ratio of 1 teacher for every 15 students.
HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN THE SCHOOL?
Since moving to a new school building we will have the space to accommodate for three classes for the September 2021-2022 school year. This will be a maximum of 45 students in the entire school. Depending on the ages of the students enrolled we will likely have a Primary class, Junior class and Intermediate class.
DO YOU HAVE JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN?
Yes, we offer programs for students in Junior Kindergarten to grade 8. Students can start in Junior Kindergarten in September of the year that they turn 4, this means if you have a September-December baby they may start JK at 3 years old!
DO YOU TEACH FRENCH AT MILLPOND ACADEMY?
Yes. We follow the Ontario French as a Second Language Core curriculum for Grade 4 to 8. We also offer a very introductory, oral vocabulary based program for our primary students.
WHAT PRECAUTIONS ARE YOU TAKING BECAUSE OF COVID-19?
For all information relating to COVID-19, please see the COVID-19 page.
DO YOUR STUDENTS WEAR UNIFORMS?
No. In an attempt to keep costs lower, there will be no uniforms required. There is a dress code to ensure students are all comfortable and ready to learn! We do offer the option to purchase Millpond Academy spirit wear in the fall and spring.
WHY IS TUITION $700 PER MONTH?
Our cost is similar to the cost of daycare, so if you are already used to paying these costs, you can just continue to do so and offer your children an individualized private education! Also, our costs are significantly lower than most other private schools, we do not require the extra expense of uniforms, and we have a very affordable Before and After School care program. The cost of tuition covers building expenses, teacher wages, supplies, resources, and some special activities.
HOW WILL YOU TEACH MULTIPLE GRADES AT ONE TIME?
Teaching today has moved far from the teacher at the front of the room lecturing all of the students. It is much more interactive, flexible and driven by the students abilities, needs and interests. This means working with a variety of grade levels and abilities at one time can be easily accommodated, especially with our small class sizes. Typically, in the public system, despite children all being the same age in the same grade, they are often working at a large range of abilities. I have experience accommodating and modifying for this range in ability. Collaboration between students of different grades, such as allowing older students to master their skills by teaching to younger students, working with a reading buddy, and small group discussions will be used. Millpond Academy will also offer a variety of independent tasks such as passion projects, consolidation and practice games, technology time, and novel studies allowing me to work one on one or in small groups with students of similar abilities. Lastly, we'll have students in all grades work on similar topics or assignments with different levels of expectation.
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO GYM WITHOUT AT GYM?
Physical education can be done in a variety of forms and settings including outdoor play/sports fields, dance, and workout classes such as yoga. Depending on COVID restrictions and regulations, I am also interested in renting out a traditional space for indoor gym activities. Alternatives to traditional gym activities may include swimming, indoor obstacle course, badminton, curling etc.
